Joni Astin is a freelance film director and cinematographer with big dreams. Based in Indonesia, the then-aspiring filmmaker taught himself the art of filmmaking in 2012, honing his craft through self-study and experience.
Since the beginning of his career, Joni has focused on creating eye-opening short movies and commercials for digital platforms. He has worked with brands across Indonesia and the globe, and several of his video projects have garnered awards at prestigious film festivals, both locally and overseas.
Feature film: A LETTER TO
This visually spectacular post-apocalyptic film envisions a doomsday scenario where high radiation levels and unstable temperatures have made the earth's surface uninhabitable, leaving humans to survive in bunkers – without the luxuries and digital communication tools we have become so familiar with. And the only form of communication that remains, is handwritten letters, carried by mail carriers who must brave the toxic environments between bunkers.
The film's dark, gritty and otherworldly atmosphere highlights the predicament of the people living in these bunkers, the grim fate of mail carriers during these times – and one girl's incredible journey to save the most important mail carrier of all, her brother.
